With so many factories and commercial buildings today, more waste is seen on the streets and even at the drainage that flows to the river up to the sea. These can cause pollution; everyone is affected and even the environment. Melbourne came up with the idea to create a tool that helps lessen this unwanted happening that can destroy mother nature and help everyone have a healthy environment using gross pollutant traps.
What are these traps about?
Gross pollutant traps (GPTs) are designed to block the water flow and catch any debris or litter. The trap is installed to catch stormwater pollution before it passes into the waterways. The GPT will act as a filter that retains litter but allows the water to flow through. It means that this trap is made only for the wastes to get filtered and not the water.
The water continually flows freely without any blockage, but the wastes like debris and litter are filtered. These water pollutants can be easily collected without letting them go to huge water surfaces like rivers and seas, which can cause water pollution. The worse scenario is, it can be poisonous and a threat to sea creatures.
What is a gross pollutant?
A gross pollutant is litter and debris greater than 5 mm in size that consists of anything, such as:
- Plastic bags
- Cigarette butts
- Chip wrappers
- Plastic materials and more
These are the litter and debris that should be collected and must be thrown to the right dump site to keep the water flow at the driveways unblocked. One reason why blocked driveways and drainage are blocked is due to the litter and debris left thrown outside by irresponsible people. So, to control these pollutants, the installation of GPTs is the right solution.
If this debris remained uncollected, it contaminates water sources causes to some unwanted situations, such as:
- Threat to aquatic habitats and wildlife
- Looks unpleasant
- Causes bad
- Attracts pests
Can you imagine how unhealthy and unpleasant the surroundings will be if there is no filtration system in the driveways and water drainage system?
Stormwater treatment system
Indeed, GPTs are considered the first line of defense in the stormwater treatment system. It can remove bulky pollutants from stormwater runoff. It is categorized as the primary treatment device and is used to fend off litter and debris
Types of GPTs
Today, GPTs are available in different types, all are removing gross pollutants from the stormwater system can be done in different ways. Here is a list of GPT categories that is available in the market:
- Specific gravity traps
- Direct screening
- Hydrodynamic separation
Which one do you think fits your needs? You can freely pick some of the options from those types.
